Insider Tip What makes this guide different

The small taverna at the eastern end serves some of the best fresh fish on the north coast — arrive hungry and skip the beach-bar snacks.

Ammoudi Beach — Northern Serenity

Ammoudi is what Alykanas and Alykes would be if they’d resisted the urge to overdevelop. Same fine sand, same forgivingly shallow water, but with a fraction of the hotels and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. This is the north coast at its most relaxed — family-friendly, low-key, and still distinctly Greek.

What Awaits You

A curved bay of soft golden sand, about 400 metres end to end, backed by olive groves rather than high-rise hotels. The water is the north-coast speciality — shallow, warm, and so clear you can count the pebbles on the seabed. It’s perfect for families with small children and anyone who prefers their beach day calm rather than chaotic.

Development here is modest: a few sunbed rows, a couple of beach bars, and some genuinely good tavernas. You won’t find water-sports centres pumping out music or bars advertising happy-hour fishbowls. What you will find is space, quiet, and a beach that still feels like a place rather than a product.

The name “Ammoudi” means “sandy” in Greek, which tells you the main selling point. This is one of the sandiest beaches on an island not short of them.

Getting There

From Zakynthos Town, drive north towards Alykes, then follow signs to Ammoudi (about 15 km, 20 minutes). The turn-off from the main road is clearly marked, and there’s a decent-sized car park near the beach (free, rarely full).

By bus: Limited services in season — check local timetables. A taxi from Zakynthos Town costs about €20-25.

From Alykanas: It’s a pleasant 15-minute walk along the coastal path if you’re staying nearby.

Facilities

Ammoudi has the essentials without excess:

  • Sunbeds & umbrellas: A few rows, reasonably priced (€5-8)
  • Beach bars: 2-3 options for drinks and snacks
  • Tavernas: Excellent local seafood places at the eastern end
  • Parking: Free car park, rarely crowded
  • Showers: At some beach bars

Insider Tips

Eat at the tavernas, not the beach bars. The family-run places at the eastern end serve genuinely fresh fish caught that morning — grilled sea bream, fried red mullet, proper Greek salads with local tomatoes. It’s some of the best food on the north coast, and the prices are lower than you’d expect.

The western end of the beach tends to be quieter. Most sunbeds are clustered centrally; walk 5 minutes and you’ll find more space.

Bring your own umbrella if you want shade in the quieter sections — the organised area is limited.

Best Time to Visit

For families: June and September — warm, calm, and peaceful.

Peak season: July-August. Still relatively quiet compared to Alykanas, but arrive before 11 AM for the best spots.

For food lovers: Any evening — the tavernas stay open late and the sunset dinners are lovely.

Tourist vs Local Perspective

Tourists discovering Ammoudi tend to become converts — “why didn’t we come here instead of Alykes?” is a common refrain. Locals from the north-coast villages treat it as a reliable local beach, somewhere to bring the family on weekends without fighting for parking.

This is a beach for people who’ve figured out that “best” doesn’t always mean “busiest.” Ammoudi offers the same sand and sea as its more famous neighbours, with a fraction of the crowds. That’s not nothing.
