Insider Tip What makes this guide different

Finikas has a small diving centre — if you want to try scuba diving in a low-pressure environment, this is one of the more relaxed places to do it on Zakynthos.

Finikas Beach — The Diver’s Discovery

Finikas (meaning “date palm” in Greek) is one of those beaches that offers a little more than just sand and sea. Yes, it has both — and good quality examples of each — but it also has a diving centre and genuinely interesting underwater life. For visitors who want to combine a beach day with their first scuba experience, this is one of the best spots on the island.

What Awaits You

A pleasant sandy beach about 300 metres long, with the same shallow, clear water that characterises the north coast. The sand is fine and golden, the slope is gentle, and the water warms quickly — classic family-beach territory.

What distinguishes Finikas is what lies beneath the surface. The marine life here is notably good for Zakynthos: fish, sea urchins, occasional octopus in the rocky areas, and decent visibility. The on-site diving centre offers everything from introductory dives for beginners to guided excursions for certified divers.

The beach itself is well-organised without being overdone. Sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar, and the diving operation — that’s the full list. No water-sports circus, no music pumping, just a practical beach with an interesting extra dimension.

Getting There

From Zakynthos Town, drive northwest towards Tsilivi/Planos (about 6 km, 12 minutes). Finikas is signed in the Planos area — look for diving centre signs if in doubt.

Parking: Street parking nearby, usually manageable.

By bus: Services to Tsilivi pass nearby — ask for the Finikas stop.

On foot: 15-20 minutes walk along the beach from central Tsilivi.

Facilities

Finikas offers practical amenities plus the diving focus:

  • Sunbeds & umbrellas: Available along the beach
  • Beach bar: Drinks and snacks
  • Diving centre: Introductory dives, courses, guided dives
  • Marine life: Good for snorkelling even without diving
  • Parking: Street parking available

Insider Tips

If you’ve never tried scuba diving, this is an excellent place for a first experience. The water is calm, the visibility is good, and the diving centre is accustomed to beginners.

Even if you’re not diving, bring a snorkel. The underwater life here is better than most Zakynthos beaches, and the shallow areas are accessible to confident swimmers.

The beach is quieter than neighbouring Planos and much quieter than central Tsilivi. Come here when you want the north-coast experience without the crowds.

Best Time to Visit

For diving: Morning hours when visibility is best.

For families: Any time — the shallow water is ideal for children.

Peak season: July-August. Still relatively peaceful compared to main Tsilivi.

For snorkelling: Morning and early afternoon for best light underwater.

Tourist vs Local Perspective

Tourists who discover Finikas often do so through the diving centre — it’s not a beach that gets heavily promoted otherwise. Locals from the Tsilivi area know it as a quieter option with decent facilities.

The honest truth: Finikas is a good beach that becomes a very good beach if you’re interested in what’s underwater. The diving centre adds a dimension most beaches lack. If you’re curious about scuba but haven’t tried it, this is a low-pressure place to start.
