Porto Roma has one of the best beach tavernas on the Vasilikos peninsula — plan to have lunch here rather than just drinks. The grilled octopus is excellent.
Porto Roma Beach — Vasilikos Charm
Porto Roma is what happens when development and nature reach a comfortable compromise. A lovely sandy beach backed by greenery rather than concrete, organised enough to be comfortable but not so much that it feels manufactured. It’s one of the most appealing spots on a peninsula that’s not short of appealing spots.

What Awaits You
A crescent of fine golden sand about 400 metres long, framed by low cliffs and greenery. The water is the Vasilikos standard — clear, calm, and shallow enough for comfortable family swimming. What distinguishes Porto Roma is the setting: this feels like a place rather than just a beach.
The beach is well organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, but the development is tasteful. There’s a genuinely good taverna right on the beach (more on that below), and the overall atmosphere is relaxed rather than commercial. You won’t find water-sports operations or beach-club music here.
The name suggests a connection to Rome or things Roman, but it’s actually named after the Roma family who’ve long owned land in the area. The name is a Zakynthian surname, not an Italian reference.
Getting There
From Zakynthos Town, drive south towards Vasilikos (about 16 km, 22 minutes). Follow signs through Vasilikos village; Porto Roma is clearly signposted towards the southeastern tip of the peninsula.
Parking: Free parking area near the beach, manageable even in high season.
By boat: Some boat tours from Zakynthos Town stop here as part of Vasilikos coast exploration.
Facilities
Porto Roma offers quality essentials:
- Sunbeds & umbrellas: Well-maintained, reasonably priced
- Taverna: Excellent beachfront restaurant (see Insider Tips)
- Beach bar: Drinks and snacks available
- Natural shade: Trees at the back of the beach
- Parking: Free car park
Insider Tips
Eat at the taverna. This isn’t just beach-bar food — it’s proper Zakynthian cooking by people who’ve been doing it for decades. The grilled octopus is genuinely good, the seafood is fresh, and the Greek salads use local tomatoes that taste like tomatoes should. It’s worth planning your beach day around lunch here.
The far ends of the beach are quieter. Most sunbeds are in the central section; walk 5 minutes in either direction for more space.
Porto Roma faces southeast, which means morning light on the water and afternoon shade developing naturally. Plan accordingly if you’re sensitive to sun.
Best Time to Visit
For lunch: Midday, any day — the taverna is the draw.
For swimming: Morning or late afternoon. The midday heat is intense but the water’s always inviting.
Peak season: July-August. Still relatively peaceful compared to Banana or Gerakas.
Evening: Beautiful at sunset — the beach faces the right direction for golden-hour views.
Tourist vs Local Perspective
Tourists who find Porto Roma often wonder why it’s not more famous — the setting is lovely and the facilities are good. Locals from Vasilikos treat it as one of their local beaches, somewhere to bring family for a proper beach-and-lunch day.
The honest truth: Porto Roma is not the most spectacular beach on Zakynthos. But it’s thoroughly pleasant, well-run, and has that combination of good sea and good food that makes for a genuinely satisfying day. Sometimes pleasant is exactly what you want.
